The familiar payment method is disappearing

As an online agency with years of experience in e-commerce and payment solutions, we closely follow developments in payment methods. One of the biggest changes ahead? iDEAL, the most popular payment system in the Netherlands, will disappear from 2026. It will be replaced by a European successor: Wero.

This transition will impact every webshop and consumer in the Netherlands. That is exactly why it is important to understand now what will change and why.

Why is iDEAL actually stopping?

Europe wants to tackle fragmentation in the payments landscape. While the Netherlands uses iDEAL, Belgium relies on Bancontact and Germany uses GiroPay. This makes cross-border payments unnecessarily complex.

With Wero, Europe aims to introduce a single, unified payment system. Less fragmentation and more convenience for both businesses and consumers. As we previously explained in our article on the evolution of payment methods, joining forces within the payments landscape is a logical and strategic step.

What exactly is Wero?

Wero has been developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a collaboration between major European banks. The system is built on the foundation of existing technologies, including iDEAL, but with additional functionalities:

  • Fast and secure payments in both online shops and physical stores.
  • Sending money between individuals, similar to Tikkie.
  • The ability to pay later and save through loyalty programs.

We expect Wero, like Pay.nl, to position itself as an all-in-one solution, but with European scale and strength.

When will you start to notice this?

The rollout of Wero in the Netherlands will start in 2026. Until then, iDEAL will remain fully available. From the end of 2027, iDEAL will be completely phased out. This transition will happen gradually and will largely be handled through your own bank.

As a digital agency, we implement new payment methods for our clients on a daily basis. Based on that hands-on experience, we know one thing for sure: proper preparation prevents surprises. Make sure your systems are up to date in time.

What does this mean for your business or webshop?

For most users, little will change: Wero will be linked to your existing bank account. Behind the scenes, however, it is wise to start reviewing the technical requirements now. Especially webshops that rely heavily on iDEAL should reassess their payment providers and integrations.

Want to know what this means for your situation? In our article about the new iDEAL, we explain how to approach this transition strategically.
