Instagram update 2025 – new formats for your posts

Instagram introduced a major change in 2025: the feed now looks different. If you invest a lot of time in creating content, you want to be sure it’s displayed properly. In this article, we explain exactly what has changed, what the new formats are, and how you can smartly adapt your feed to these updates.

What has changed in the Instagram feed in 2025?

Instagram now prioritizes content that fills more of the screen. The familiar square post (1:1) is still supported, but it stands out less visually. The new standard is a 4:5 aspect ratio (1080 × 1350 pixels), which is better suited for mobile viewing.

What are the new dimensions for Instagram?

For optimal visibility in the feed, it’s best to work with:

  • 1080 × 1350 px for regular posts (4:5 aspect ratio)
  • 1080 × 1920 px for Stories and Reels (9:16 aspect ratio)
  • 1080 × 1080 px for square posts – still technically possible, but less effective

How do you adapt the layout of your Instagram feed?

Start with your strategy

First, review your existing content strategy. Which visuals work well in the new format? What can you reuse, and what needs a different approach?

Use smart tools

In our workflows, we regularly use Canva, Adobe Express, and Figma to create visuals directly in the correct format.

In our social media services, we use these types of tools as a standard for our clients, ensuring everything aligns with their branding as well as the platform’s requirements.

What does this mean for businesses and advertisers?

For ads, the impact is even greater. Posts in a 4:5 format take up more space on mobile screens and therefore attract attention more quickly. Want to learn more about advertising?

Focus on quality

Instagram penalizes blurry visuals. Always work with high-resolution images and crop with intent. We see that small adjustments, such as adding more space above your subject, can quickly make a big difference.

Embrace the new Instagram standard

Instagram is changing, and as a brand you can adapt without reinventing everything. Work with 1080 × 1350 px formats, use smart tools and reusable templates, and keep your visuals sharp. Often, that’s all it takes to stay relevant in your audience’s feed.
